What is CPQ (configure, price, quote)?
Mondrio Team · Oct 15, 2026 · 2 min read
In short. CPQ is software plus a set of rules that helps sales build a correct quote: the right products, prices, discounts and terms, with approval where a deal goes outside the rules.
Example in a B2B tech company
A rep picks a tier and add-ons, and the CPQ tool applies the right list prices and approval rules.
How it works
Configure checks which products and options belong together. Price applies list prices, volume tiers and discounts. Quote produces the document the buyer signs. Approval rules send deals outside the discount guardrails to a manager or the deal desk.
When it fits
Many products, options or price rules; many reps quoting; approvals that get lost in email.
Watch out for
CPQ automates the rules you already have. Unclear packaging or loose discount guardrails get faster, not better, so fix those first.
Common questions
Is CPQ only for large companies?
No. It pays off once quotes take long to build, contain errors or wait on approvals.
How does CPQ relate to a CRM?
The CRM holds accounts and opportunities. CPQ builds the quote for an opportunity and sends the final products and price back to it.
